Professional wine movers vs. DIY.

Is the risk to your collection worth the savings? Four technical factors most collectors underestimate when weighing a DIY move or general mover against a licensed wine specialist.

Temperature fluctuations

A rental truck or general mover can't hold 55°F. A single afternoon above 75°F accelerates aging, expands corks, and can push wine past seepage. Reefer trailers with signed temp logs are the only defense on a long haul.

Vibration & agitation

Fine wine needs to settle for days to weeks after any move. Rough suspension, hand-loaded stacks, and padded crates let bottles shift constantly — bruising the wine and dislodging sediment in older vintages.

Insurance liability gaps

Homeowner's policies almost never cover fine wine in transit. General movers rarely insure alcohol as fine wine — payouts default to depreciated cost per pound, not market value per bottle. A licensed wine mover carries wine-specific cargo insurance.

Licensing & compliance

Transporting alcohol across state lines requires specific licensing. A DIY move or a general mover can be turned back at a state line, or worse — cited and forced to abandon the load.
